HELPFUL HINTS:
HOSTING THE PERFECT BACKYARD PARTY
1) KEEP IT SIMPLE - Ask your guests to BYOB, BYOM (bring your own meat) or bring a side dish or dessert. Paper plates, cups & napkins, plastic silverware make for easy clean-up. If you'd like to dress it up, add a few decorative serving pieces or simple decorations like a string of white lights overhead or along your deck railing.
2) GET CREATIVE - pick a theme & do something unique. Throw a luau & dress up tables with grass skirts & have a limbo contest. Or throw a fiesta & have a pinata & rent a margarita machine.
3) KEEP COOL - have plenty of shade available (outdoor umbrellas, rent a party tent), provide misters or fans, have a kiddie pool or inflatable slide for the kiddos. Setting out a bottle of sunscreen is a good idea too.
4) KEEP PESTS AWAY - have citronella candles or citronella tiki torches to keep mosquitos at bay, set out a bottle of bug spray, put food tents over serving dishes to keep flies away.
5) HAVE FUN! - Oftentimes the host or hostess of a party is so worried about all the details that they forget to have fun. The main purpose of a backyard BBQ is to hang out with your friends or family, so remember to breathe, sit back & relax!
Here are more detailed tips:
TO HOST THE PERFECT BACKYARD PARTY:
1) Decide the date, time, and what you want your guests to bring. Spread the word through invitations, emails, texts or word of mouth. It is perfectly acceptable to ask guests to BYOB or BYOM (bring your own meat). You can prepare a few side dishes or toss out some bags of chips and jars of pickles if you want to go super low-maintenance. Unless you want to take care of every last detail and provide all the food and drinks yourself; but just remember, this may set a precedent for all parties to follow. 2) Purchase paper plates, napkins, plastic silverware and plastic cups in large quantities. These items never expire and will be in high demand during your BBQ. This also makes clean up much easier.
3) Mow your yard, clean the area, and set up outdoor games for all age groups to enjoy. Limbo, horseshoes, washers and croquet are good examples. Entertain kids with a sack race, egg toss or tug-of-war. You could even have prizes for the big winners. For extra cool fun, bring in a kiddie pool or rent an inflatable bounce house or water slide.
4) Rent or borrow tables and chairs if needed. Provide shade with umbrellas or rented party tents so guests won't get too hot. As the BBQ continues into the evening, have citronella candles and tiki torches on hand to keep pests at a distance. Create mood lighting with white Christmas lights strung overhead or outdoor string lights along deck or balcony rails.
5) Have plenty of cold non-alcoholic beverages on hand in addition to any spirited drinks you may be serving. Too much heat plus too much alcohol often equals trouble.
6) Provide music with outdoor speakers or simply face your indoor speakers towards an open window.
7) Light desserts such as key lime pie or lemon mousse are good ideas for hot days. Other suggested menu items: steaks, hamburgers, chicken, hot links, kebobs, sausage balls, salads, veggie plates, baked beans and fruit are good choices.
8) Make the drink station stand out – get creative. Rent a margarita machine, hire a bartender to tend a wet bar. Fill a baby pool with ice and plant your cold drinks there. Decorate the bar with grass streamers and paper lanterns. Go high-tech and create a cocktail drink menu on your iPad and display it for guests to choose from.
9) Send guests home with a party favor such as a bottle of the sangria you served or jar of barbeque sauce with a homemade label (put your name, the date of the party and a catchy quote such as “Thanks for grillin’ & chillin’ with the Smiths – Memorial Day 2012”.)
10) Sit back, relax and enjoy being the host of a well planned, successful BBQ. Remember spending quality time with friends or family is really what the gathering is about.
